May 15, 2013 – A flawless pear-shaped D-colour diamond went for $26.7M at a Geneva Christie’s Auction House event. The 101.73 carat gem accounted for over a quarter of the total sales that day.

Lasers Find Lost Ancient Treasure City
May 15, 2013 – Scientists at the National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping (NCALM) bombarded a patch of rainforest in Honduras and have uncovered structures that are now believed to potentially be two lost cities, one of which could be the lost legendary “white city”.

Greener Gold Extraction
May 14, 2013 – Gold extraction from other materials has typically required cyanide salts that have harmed the environment. Researchers at Northwestern University got lucky (they were trying to make three-dimensional cubes out of gold and starch. Don’t ask me why.) and discovered that corn starch actually does the same thing, making for a far greener future for the process. It can also be used to extract gold from consumer waste.

May 6, 2013 – Kleenex. Xerox. These are beyond brands, into household words to mean whatever they do, just as Google is as much a verb as it is a noun. Can you Google on Bing? IN any case, Costco is claiming that Tiffany(-style) jewelry is of the same kind, and as such they feel they can legitimately sell jewelry under the Tiffany name. Naturally, Tiffany does not agree.

Apr 18, 2013 – Sometimes you just get lucky. Petra Diamonds stocks surged after a 25.5 carat blue diamond was unearthed from a South African mine. The Cullinan mine, source of the largest rough diamond ever (3,106 carats), was the source of the gem.

Apr 22, 2013 – Jewelry at burial grounds is generally quite a good indicator for the relative importance and wealth of the buried individual. The same is being assumed of a 4,500 year-old woman who was found with noteworthy jewelry. Architects from Wessex Archaeology have called her “Kingsmead’s queen”, named for the quarry where she was found (near Windsor)

Apr 23, 2013 – Synthetic diamond producing technology is getting better and better, and recently Gemesis Diamond Company produced the largest, whitest, clearest diamond ever made. The emerald cut gem is 1.29 carats, with a retail price of over $7,000.

Turns out he’s being quite rewarded for his morality, not only being reunited with lost family, but being offered a home and money to compensate him for what he would have made pawning off the ring, and more.
